The Season for Love

Evangelist Dr. Bob Sanders

The Supply of Love – “love covereth” (Proverbs 10:12)

When describing one of the characteristics of love, the writer said, “love covereth.” The word “covereth” means to plump or fill up hollows. Some have said that love is blind. This may be true of some worldly sensual love, but this is not true of a godly love. Love looks at the object it has chosen to love and sees all of its flaws and shortcomings. While loves sees the object for what it is, love also sees it for what it can be. Love begins to plump or fill in the hollows. When love finds an area of weakness in that which it loves, loves begins to help strengthen that area. When love discovers a gap or a low place it tries to fill up or make it smooth even if it requires the sacrifice of itself. God is not blind to our depravity, but in love responded with the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Secrecy of Love – “love covereth” (Proverbs 10:12)

The word “covereth” also means to conceal or to cover for secrecy. While love acknowledges that the object that it loves has flaws, unlike hatred that exposes and magnifies, love conceals. In the book of the Revelation, Satan is called “the accuser of our brethren” (Revelation 12:10). This truth is seen in the book of Job when the Devil accused Job. Love is not an accuser, but rather an advocate. Love in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, stands between me and the accuser. The blood of Christ not only cleanses me from all sin, but that blood removed my sin never to be remembered any more. The blood of Christ has concealed my sinful depravity.

The Season of Love – “loveth at all times” (Proverbs 17:17)

True love does not cycle on and off. Paul said in I Corinthians 13:8, “Charity never faileth.” The word “faileth” means to drop away, to lose or become inefficient. Once love has chosen the object, it never ceases to love that object. It is not the character of the object, but the choice of love that determines the season of love. There has never been a time when God did not love me and there will never be a time when God will cease to love me. I am glad that I have a friend that sticketh closer than a brother and a friend that loveth at all times. (see Proverbs 17:17&18:24)
